Guidance from a Mentor

Mentoring is a relationship-based process focused on guiding, supporting, and developing the mentee. Effective mentors require clear understanding of their role, active communication skills, and commitment to their mentee’s success.

Define the purpose, duration, and frequency of your meetings. Discuss what you will and will not cover (e.g., career paths vs. emotional issues). Establish ground rules for confidentiality.

Share relevant, high-level professional experiences to make the relationship mutual, but keep the focus on the mentee. Listen actively and non-judgmentally.

Help the mentee identify SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound). These goals will drive your discussions.

Assure the mentee that discussions will remain private, unless the content involves harm to themselves or others.
